If bleeding persists, over-the-counter nasal decongestants or saline sprays may be used to soothe and moisten the nasal passages. For more severe or recurrent cases, a healthcare provider may perform a nasal cauterization, using heat or chemicals to seal bleeding blood vessels. In cases of posterior nosebleeds or if there is a significant amount of bleeding, nasal packing or even surgical intervention might be required. Addressing underlying conditions, such as managing blood pressure or treating nasal disorders, is also important to prevent future episodes. It is essential to seek medical attention if a nosebleed is severe, does not stop with basic measures, or occurs frequently, as this may indicate a more serious underlying issue.
